Phonetic and Auditory Trading Relations between Acoustic Cues in Speech Perception : Preliminary Results
نویسنده
چکیده
When two different acoustic cues contribute to the perception of a phonetic distinction, a trading relation between the cues can be demonstrated if the speech stimuli are phonetically ambiguous. Do the cues trade also in unambiguous stimuli? Four different trading relations were examined using a fixed-standard AX discrimination task wi th stimuli either from the vicinity of the phonetic category boundary or from within a phonetic category. The results suggest that certain trading relations (presumably of auditory origin) hold in both conditions while others are tied to the perception of phonetic contrasts and thus appear to be specific to the speech mode.

Auditory Neural Processing of Speech
Recordings from single auditory neurons in response to speech and speech-like stimuli provide detailed descriptions of neural processing in the earliest stages of speech perception. These studies show that a great deal of information about both the formant pattern and voice pitch is available in both the average discharge rates and the temporal discharge patterns of auditory-nerve fibers and co...
متن کاملUsing the Distributional Statistics of Speech Sounds for Weighting and Integrating Acoustic Cues
A great deal of behavioral evidence suggests that infants can use distributional statistics to learn speech sound categories. Recently, a number of computational approaches have demonstrated the feasibility of statistical learning by showing that the distributional statistics of linguistically-relevant acoustic cues can be learned in an unsupervised way. However, speakers and listeners use a la...
متن کاملPhonetic trading relations and context effects: new experimental evidence for a speech mode of perception.
This article reviews a variety of experimental findings, most of them obtained in the last few years, that show that the perception of phonetic distinctions relies on a multiplicity of acoustic cues and is sensi tive to the surrounding context in very specific ways. Nearly all of these effects have correspondences in speech production, and they are readily explained by the assumption that liste...
متن کاملREGONGILING TRADING RELATIONSAND AGOUSTIG INVARlANGE
An approach to modelling speech perception is proposed that integrales acoustic-phonetic and psycholinguistic knowledge. The approach acknowledges the value of models of acoustic invariance and trading relations, usually considered to be in Opposition to each other, by suggesting !hat both types of perception occur, but operate in different circumstances. lt acknowledges the versatility of the ...
متن کاملAuditory and phonetic memory codes in the discrimination of consonants and vowels.
Recognition memory for consonants and vowels selected from within and between phonetic categories was examined in a delayed comparison discrimination task. Accuracy of discrimination for synthetic vowels selected from both within and between categories was inversely related to the magnitude of the comparison interval. In contrast, discrimination of synthetic stop consonants remained relatively ...
